Mr. Rennie Vazquez is the Deputy Director, Defense Suicide Prevention Office. Mr. Vazquez served in the United States Air Force for over 21 years as a Human Resources Officer and served in a variety of human resources positions ranging from base-level, the Air Force Personnel Center, the Air Combat Command, Headquarters United States Air Force, two command tours, and on the Staff of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He has served in positions throughout the United States and overseas.
Upon separation from military service, Mr. Vazquez worked as Human Resources Specialist for the Washington Headquarters Services, and later worked in the Office if the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, as the Acting Director for the Executive Secretariat where he led a transformational initiative to move the Secretariat from staffing actions to portfolio managers with each individual assigned responsibilities for specific Policy Components and thereby creating a strategic partnership with the components assigned.
Mr. Vazquez next worked at the DTMO as the Chief, Policy Branch, where he championed the overall re-write of title 37, Travel and Transportation Allowances, revamping the existing framework to consolidated broad and flexible legislative human resources secured in the FY 2012 National Defense Authorization Act. The first major change to these authorities in over 50 years!
In August, 2012, Mr. Vazquez was detailed to the Office of Assistant Secretary of Defense for Readiness and Force Management, where he worked and later led the multi-service Joint Benefits Working Group which focused on benefits for same-sex partners and spouses. He was later asked to be the lead action officer on the opening of closed combat positions and occupations to women in the services and later as the Acting Director, Assignments and Separations Policy where he was responsible for the oversight of assignment and separations policy for over 1.4 million service members.
Mr. Vazquez is a graduate of the Air Force Squadron Officer School, the Air Command and Staff College, the Air War College and completed the George Washington University, College of Professional Studies, and Senior Leaders Program.
His decorations include two Air Force Achievement Medals, Five Meritorious Service Medals, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Secretary of Defense Award for Excellence and the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Civilian Service.
He holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Manhattan College, New York and a Master’s Degree from Troy University, Alabama, and is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree from Catholic University in Human Resources Management.
